During times of crisis and chaos, emergency orders provide a means for elected officials to get a handle on things. As the monstrous storm known as Hurricane Irma sails towards the United States, this certainly qualifies as one of those times.
However, a head-scratching executive order has been issued for one of our nation’s territories in the Caribbean.
As The Daily Caller shares, “U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp signed an emergency order allowing the seizure of private guns, ammunition, explosives and property the National Guard may need to respond to Hurricane Irma.”
In fairness to Mapp, Irma is a devastating storm, and he needed to do everything he could to insure the islands were prepared to deal with what could turn out to be complete devastation.
“This is not an opportunity to go outside and try to have fun with a hurricane,” Mapp said, according to The Daily Caller. “It’s not time to get on a surfboard.”
That said, it’s unclear how seizing private weapons and ammunition would help fend off a natural disaster. Is the National Guard planning on shooting it out of the sky?
“I find that this order is necessary to maintain the health, welfare, and safety of the people of the Virgin Islands,” the order reads in part.
Fair enough. But how are the residents that remain going to protect themselves after you take all of their stuff?
“The Adjutant General is authorized and directed to seize arms, ammunition, explosives, incendiary material and any other property that may be required by the military forces for the performance of this emergency mission,” the order continues.
Irma is rightfully dominating media coverage at this time,, and this order is slipping through the cracks.
We would expect to see some more attention paid to the justification for specific parts of this order once things return to normal.
Please continue to pray for those caught in the path of Hurricane Irma as it barrels towards the U.S.
