CA Gov. Gavin Newsom Shuts Down Indoor Church Services Across Several Counties As Cases Climb

As COVID-19 cases in California continue to climb, the state’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom has ordered an array of facilities—including churches—in several counties to halt indoor operations once more.

Newsom announced the order in a tweet on Monday, ordering gyms, churches, and more to shut down, effective immediately.

In addition to the order affecting just 30 counties in the state, all counties are now ordered to close indoor operations in the following businesses:

  • Dine-in restaurants
  • Wineries and tasting rooms
  • Movie theaters
  • Family entertainment centers (e.g. bowling alleys, miniature golf, batting cages, and arcades)
  • Zoos and museums
  • Cardrooms

The order also extends to bars, brewpubs, breweries, and pubs across the state, which must cease all operations both indoor and outdoor unless they are offering seated, outdoor dining. They also may not sell alcohol except in the same transaction as a meal.

Counties that remain on the County Monitoring List for 3 consecutive days must also shut down the following industries or activities unless they can operate outside or by pick-up:

  • Fitness centers
  • Worship services
  • Protests
  • Offices for non-essential sectors
  • Personal care services, like nail salons, body waxing and tattoo parlors
  • Hair salons and barbershops
  • Malls

Los Angeles County above and beyond Newsom’s statewide restrictions and ordered all non-critical offices to shut down again:

As we recently reported, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Gov. Newsom does indeed have the authority to shut down churches in spite of the free exercise clause of the First Amendment.

Whether or not Christians continue to comply with the governor’s order, however, has yet to be seen.

Todd Starnes reports that some churches plan to hold outdoor services.

“We want to follow the word of God,” said Phillip Jones, pastor of Crosspoint Baptist Church in Pasadena in a live video on Facebook, urging Christians to consider their plans in prayer and not lash out at government officials. “Our plan is to continue to meet, but I want you to know I am seeking counsel from pastors, from attorneys, asking for input and advice.”
