As Christians, we are called to be the “salt of the earth.” Salt is a preservative and gives flavor to the food on which it is used.
By this, we are called to preserve society by applying the moral standards Jesus taught and give the flavor of the gospel in all that we do. This way, we allow others to see Jesus in us, giving them the opportunity to come to know the same hope that we have in Him. This is a big responsibility and sometimes Christians can get weary in well-doing, causing them to fall away from the faith and even into the grip of sin. When this happens, it’s a tragedy and can lead others away from the faith and prevent unbelievers from finding the truth.
The case of formerly Christian self-help author Josh Harris is a tragic example of how this can happen., Harris has not only left the faith but seems to have run right into the arms of the LGBT community as well. Once a beacon of light, Harris is now living in the darkness of unbelief, conforming to the world, and pandering to the LGBT left.
Harris, author of I Kissed Dating Goodbye, a book that promotes a Christ-centered approach to courting rather than dating, recently divorced his wife of 21 years, Shannon. After leaving his wife, he proclaimed, “By all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian.” What a shame to the reputation he had built for himself as a God-fearing proponent of traditional marriage.
Then, last weekend, he was seen at British Columbia’s Pride Parade, where he reportedly sported “a t-shirt with a rainbow Union Jack design” according to Life Site News, and took pictures with LGBT activists such as Queerology podcast host Matthias Roberts and rocker Trey Pearson.

Harris, a former pastor, has come out with an apparent apology for his life of Christianity: “I have lived in repentance for the past several years – repenting of my self-righteousness, my fear-based approach to life, the teaching of my books, my views of women in the church, and my approach to parenting to name a few.”
It’s interesting that he says he had a “fear-based approach to life” when the Bible tells us the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. It is clear Harris has decided to forsake wisdom and live like the fool in Psalm 14 who has said in his heart, “there is no God.”
In his apology statement, he continued: “But I specifically want to add to this list now: to the LGBTQ+ community, I want to say that I am sorry for the views that I taught in my books and as a pastor regarding sexuality. I regret standing against marriage equality, for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry.”
What a sad testimony. Harris once stood on solid, biblical principles and truths. Now he has shamed himself for the sake of twisted LGBT ideology. He is now “sorry” for standing for Christ, traditional marriage, and morality. Not only does this obviously ruin his own reputation and testimony as a Christian, but it perverts true Christianity in the eyes of those are in desperate need of Jesus. His falling away and subsequent apology for Christian living will give members of the LGBT community the idea that Christianity is simply an act and there is no power in it. This could not be further from the truth.
Not only has he had a damaging impact on the way unbelievers view Christianity, but there is no doubt that he has also caused Christians who were following him and his example to question their very own Christianity. What an abysmal situation Harris has created, all for the sake of an ideology that stands in direct opposition of the truth he claimed to have once known.
The Post notes that Harris’ departure from Christianity and its precepts led Dr. Heath Lambert of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville to cut a foreword Harris had written from Lambert’s upcoming book on sexual purity.
“In Finally Free I am trying to be clear about a Christian approach to sexuality. Joshua’s recent actions and statements only confuse that attempt at clarity and will lead others astray,” Lambert explained. “Was Joshua a Christianized unbeliever who never knew Christ? We do not know, but God does. Is he a Christian who has fallen into grievous sin, and is in need of restoration? We do not know, but God does.”
“What we do know is that Joshua Harris is in absolute spiritual peril,” Lambert concluded. “He needs our love, and he needs our prayers. He has mine, and I trust he will have yours as well.”
Harris does indeed need our prayers and, as Christians, the best way we can help Harris is to pray for his restoration to the faith. It’s also imperative to pray for those affected by his selfish actions and the damage that he has done to Christianity in the public arena.
Make no mistake, folks, we are in a spiritual battle every single day. Guard your hearts and be sure to protect yourselves lest you also fall!
