Every single day, someone new is accused of sexual abuse, assault, or misconduct. Politicians, journalists, actors, producers, no one is safe. Everyone seems to be determined to either expose abuse they’ve kept to themselves for years, or try to pull a political enemy down in the undertow of a national hysteria.
But here is something really bizarre. As the media obsesses over Weinstein and Franken and Moore, a former senator is on trial for something that seems potentially more scandalous, especially considering his political history. This is not to say that sexual misconduct, harassment, or abuse is not wrong, it is.
But is it truly more worthy of the media obsession than what former Senator Ralph Shortey is currently standing trial for? And, considering he is a Republican, why is it not dominating headlines the way Roy Moore is?
We don’t have answers to these questions, all we can do is look at the facts.
The Washington Post reports that Shortey, who served as a Senator to Oklahoma until he resigned following allegations of possession of child pornography and child sex trafficking, reached a plea deal with prosecutors today.
The child pornography charges were dropped after Shortey pled guilty to a rendezvous with a 17-year-old boy he met on the internet.
Shortey, who represented a portion of Oklahoma City, was first charged in Cleveland County in March, after police officers found him and the underage teenager in a motel room. Authorities said the two had been talking since they met on Craigslist the year before and later agreed to go to a Super 8 motel in Moore, Okla., just south of Oklahoma City.
Investigators also found messages the two had exchanged on a messaging app called Kik.
According to an affidavit, the teen told Shortey that he needed money for spring break, and the two talked about meeting for sex.
“I don’t really have any legitimate things I need help with right now,” Shortey wrote, the affidavit said. “Would you be interested in sex stuff.”
“Yes,” the teen responded.
Shortey was charged with engaging in child prostitution, transporting a minor for prostitution and engaging in prostitution within 1,000 feet of a church. The motel was near First Christian Church. Those charges were dismissed in September, when state officials turned over the case to federal prosecutors. Shortey was indicted in federal court on child pornography and sex trafficking charges that same month.
Why is it this story isn’t bigger? It seems like something the left-wing media would be all over. Shortey was a pro-family, pro-Trump Republican who actively engaged in homosexual prostitution with a minor while also possessing child pornography.
Perhaps the press is just too busy trying to take down Moore to pay too much attention to this because Shortey is already out of the Senate and it’s simply not politically expedient for them to spend too much time on this disgusting case.
Either way, as liberals cannibalize each other over feminism and sexual abuse, conservatives and Christians ought to be fully honest with ourselves that this man is scum. Political affiliation doesn’t matter, but hypocrisy does. This man claimed to defend traditional values and yet as he was serving in the United States Senate was obtaining child porn and paying for sex with children.
This is an important reminder that as the scandalized left-wing media often seems to dictate the most outrageous story of the day, they don’t. Under our noses, each and every day, heinous crimes are committed. Morality doesn’t cease when the media moves on to the next juicy story though. The national conversation changes like the whim, but God’s morality remains steadfast and will forever.
