Pregnant Woman With Brain Cancer Refuses Treatment, Chooses To Carry Her Baby To Term Instead

A Michigan woman by the name of Carrie DeKlyen refused to participate in a clinical trial that could increase her chances of survival amid her ongoing battle against glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of cancer.

The reason? To participate in the trial, DeKlyen would have had to terminate her pregnancy – and that simply wasn’t an option for her.

According to WOODTV, Carrie currently has five children with her husband Nick.

The outlet states that surgeons initially removed Carrie’s brain tumor twice, only to have it return again both times with a vengeance.

Following those unsuccessful operations, Carrie was informed of a trial at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor that could save her.

“This trial, they said, would have prolonged her life, medically speaking, even longer,” WOODTV quotes Carrie’s sister-in-law Sonya Nelson as stating.

“But they chose to continue with the pregnancy. So this is where we are today.”

WOODTV reports that Carrie is currently in a semi-conscious state following a stroke that occurred as a result of her brain tumor.

Doctors hope to keep her alive for the next 8 weeks, at which point Carrie will be 28 weeks into her pregnancy and doctors will be able to deliver the baby.

WOODTV quotes Sonya as stating that the family hopes Carrie will be able to wake up and see her baby.

“We would love for her to be able to see this gift that she gave,” Sonya said. “She gave this child the gift of life.”

As for Carrie’s fate, the family appears to possess a peaceful calm and acceptance that can only come from knowing and trusting God.

“We are a family of faith,” Sonya said according to WOODTV. “We are just believing that God’s plan for Carrie is to be healed. And if he chooses to heal her here or in heaven, we will still trust in him.”

According to WOODTV, Carrie’s husband Nick has not been able to work as a result of the ongoing situation.

This has created some financial pressure for the family. Thankfully, however, the family’s community has stepped up.

A Buffalo Wild Wings shop in their area agreed to donate 20% of all proceeds collected on Wednesday, August 9 to the family.

Sonya also set up a GoFundMe page for the family and it’s already raised $55,115 of its $75,000 goal as of writing.

If you’re not able to donate, please say a prayer for the DeKlyen family, that Carrie may be able to deliver her baby safely. Please also ask God to grant healing to Carrie if it is her well and ask that He might help the family continue to place their trust and hope in His will.
