The Canadian province of Nova Scotia has advanced a bill which aims to restrict pro-life protests outside abortion clinics.

The legislation, the Protecting Access to Reproductive Health Care Act, or Bill 242, was introduced by NDP Nova Scotia MLA Claudia Chender and enjoys the support of a one-time pro-life Catholic premier to Nova Scotia, Stephen McNeil.

LifeSiteNews reports that it passed the second reading Wednesday and is now awaiting committee review.

They explain:

The law would ban any type of pro-life protest in an “access zone” against a patient or physician thatt “extends a distance of 50 metres from the boundaries of any parcel of land on which the facility is located.”

Section 15 of the bill reads: “A police officer may arrest, without warrant, a person who the police officer believes on reasonable and probable grounds has committed or is committing an offence under this Act.”

There are currently four hospitals in the province where women may procure abortions.

Naturally, the bill has been met with outrage from the nation’s pro-life activists.

“This draconian ‘bubble zone’ bill calls on the police and courts to do the bidding of leftist ideologues who want to stomp down the voices of conservative-minded citizens in Nova Scotia,” said David Cooke, the campaigns manager for Campaign Life Coalition told LifeSiteNews this week.

They have also launched a petition against any type of law in the province which restricts the freedom of protest and speech that had already gained over 2,400 signatures when it was delivered to Nova Sotia ministers Mark Furey and Randy Delorey in December and now has over 3,100.

“For the liberals to step in and create anti–free speech zones in public spaces, where citizens may face arrest for being pro-life, is antithetical to a free and democratic society,” Cooke said.
