There was one question on the lips of every truly pro-life American the day thousands of students walked out of class to protest gun violence in the US: what about abortion?
Would school administrators or the media have reacted the same way if these students had walked out to protest the mass genocide taking place on American soil over the last 30 years? The millions of lives lost to abortion, and the subsequent lives ruined by the grievous assault on the womb?
One teacher in Rocklin, California, Julianne Benzel, dared to ask her students if they believed their administrators should have accommodated a walkout to protest abortion following the highly-publicized, school-backed anti-gun demonstration on March 3rd, and while she was actually suspended for several days, one student was subsequently inspired to find out the answer.
The result was a national walkout for life, which took place on Wednesday, organized by Rocklin High School student Brandon Gillespie, and the answer he provided to Benzel’s question from last month was predictable: neither school or national news media had any interest in treating the demonstration the same way they had the anti-gun walkout.
Nonetheless, the walkout was a success, as hundreds of students across the country joined Gillespie in taking 17 minutes of silence outside their classrooms to honor the ten lives that would be lost by abortion during that period, as well as the over 60 million lives brutally ended since Roe v. Wade.
Students for Life, who co-sponsored the event, covered the walkout with live video at several schools, including Rocklin, Moriarty High School in New Mexico, Los Alamitos High School in California, and Frederick East Classical High School in Maryland. They reported, according to Life Site News, “enthusiastic crowds brandishing a variety of signs, as well as honks of support from passing cars. Several members of the Rocklin community turned out to support Brandon Gillespie, as well.”
“We want to make students aware that this is an issue for their generation,” a Frederick East administrator identified as Kim told SFLA, “because a lot of their classmates may not even be here because of the abortion movement.”
Students for Life of America president Kristan Hawkins tweeted out a powerful image of a display at Los Alamitos High School, which featured 1,700 baby socks laid out to represent the estimated 1,700 babies lost to abortion daily.
So honored to join students at Los Alamitos High School in LA today for the #ProLifeWalkout. Look at this awesome display they also set up to remember the 1700 that will be lost today because of #abortion! #defundPP #abolishabortion pic.twitter.com/DRvzLK18mJ

There was, as expected, plenty of pushback. “Counter-protesters showed up at New Mexico’s Moriarty High School brandishing signs reading ‘Don’t call yourself pro-life if you only value certain lives!’ and ‘Thou Shalt Not Mess With Women’s Reproductive Rights, Fallopians 4:28,’ Church Militant reports. Three California chapters of Refuse Fascism, an organization affiliated with the far-left Antifa movement, also announced plans to protest Hawkins’ speech Wednesday evening at California State University, Fullerton,” Life Site News notes.
And Gillespie found out first hand that his school was not willing to accommodate his walkout as they had the anti-gun walkout on March 3rd.
“Gillespie says the school confirmed his suspicions by waiting until the last minute to respond and denying him several accommodations it had made for the gun walkout, including flexible lesson plans and the use of school sound equipment. A district spokesperson claimed the anti-gun event was ‘viewpoint neutral’ and the pro-life event was not, despite the fact that the former’s organizers supported and opposed specific pieces of legislation,” Life Site News says.
Seriously?! Protesting the sacred rights our nation was founded on is anything but viewpoint neutral! Preserving and protecting innocent life should always be viewpoint neutral, and that includes supporting the right to life in all forms, whether that be self-defense or banning abortion.
Good for these students for standing up for life! May they ever be emboldened to speak the truth.
