In response to its growing number of transgender students, a high school in England has reportedly issued a new policy banning girls from wearing skirts.
According to The Telegraph, the school – Priory School, located in Sussex, England – now requires all Year 7 (ages 11 to 12) students wear trousers, regardless of their gender.
The Telegraph quotes the school’s headmaster Tony Smith as stating that the change was introduced in response to a growing number of students who questioned the need for garments to differ between boys and girls.
Yup, you read that right.
Students were upset by the common sense notion that formal dress mandates that boys wear pants and girls wear skirts so the headmaster just rolled over and gave them what they wanted – one look for all.
“Pupils have been saying why do boys have to wear ties and girls don’t, and girls have [a] different uniform to boys,” Smith reportedly told the Telegraph.
“So we decided to have the same uniform for everybody from Year 7.”
“Another issue,” he reportedly continued, “was that we have a small but increasing number of transgender students and therefore having the same uniform is important to them.”
Some (sensible) parents are reportedly critical of the school’s move to implement gender-neutral uniforms.
The Telegraph quotes one parent as stating, “my daughter said she has got a gender and it’s female, so being gender neutral when she has got a gender is a big deal for her, as she proud to be a girl. I feel girls should be allowed to wear skirts if they want to.”
The outlet quotes another parent, who’s in love with the idea, as stating, “I’m not in favor of uniform at all but if you’re going to have a uniform I think it is great it’s gender neutral.”
Online, many have expressed disparaging sentiments.
