Trump Administration Demands End To Inhumane ‘Three-Parent’ Fertility Experiments

As we’ve seen in all sorts of movies through the years, things are just fine until a rogue scientist gets involved.

Here’s an interesting premise for a movie that’s unfortunately based on a true story.

As LifeSiteNews (LSN) shares, “the Food and Drug Administration warned a fertility doctor to stop marketing an unapproved IVF technology that creates a human embryo using the DNA of three people.”

New York-based Dr. John Zhang has been looking to run clinical trials on his brainchild, mitochondrial replacement technology, or MRT for short.

LSN points out that the technique “aims to prevent diseases passed through mitochondrial DNA by transferring the mother’s nuclear DNA to a donor egg in which the nucleus has been removed but the mitochondria remains.”

If it smells like eugenics… you know the rest.

Zhang has already been in the news for claiming to engineer the “first live birth” using the technique, and that prompted him to seek approval to further test the procedure.

“So this is very revolutionary,” he said at the time, according to LSN.

Trump’s FDA has told him in no uncertain terms to knock it off, but proponents have come to his defense.

“Other countries are ahead of us on this,” Naomi Cahn, a professor at the George Washington University Law School, told MIT Technology Review, LSN shares. “We need to be more sensitive to what’s going on internationally with this technology.”

To that end, the UK became the first country to approve three-parent IVF technique earlier this year. Supporters have claimed that the technology might one day eliminate genetic diseases, but detractors have called the practice out for what it is.

“The human embryo is a new human life with potential; it should be respected and protected from the moment of conception and not used as disposable material,” Auxiliary Bishop John Sherrington of Westminster said earlier this year, according to LSN.

We can all be thankful that the FDA stepped up to the plate here, but it unfortunately probably won’t be the last time an agenda-driven scientist has to be set straight.
