What would Orwell think of what has become of the nation he once allegorized in his classic dystopian novel, 1984?
A mother of two in the UK was arrested in front of her children, detained for several hours, and ordered by a judge not to refer to a biological male as a male, all because she got into a Twitter spat with a trans activist.
Let. That. Sink. In.
“I was arrested in my home by three officers, with my autistic ten-year-old daughter and breastfed 20-month-old son present,” wrote Kate Scottow, 38, of Hitchin, Hertfordshire on the Mumsnet online forum according to Daily Mail. “I was then detained for seven hours in a cell with no sanitary products (which I said I needed) before being interviewed then later released under investigation … I was arrested for harassment and malicious communications because I called someone out and misgendered them on Twitter.”
The Daily Mail reported that Scottow, who is still under investigation, was photographed, had her DNA and fingerprints taken, and was banned by a court from referring to the accuser as a man.
Additionally, her cellphone and laptop are still in police custody.
The Hertfordshire Police confirmed the arrest to the Daily Mail, explaining that “we take all reports of malicious communication seriously.”
High Court papers obtained by The Mail on Sunday detail how Mrs. Scottow is accused of a “campaign of targeted harassment” against Miss Hayden, allegedly motivated by her “status as a transgender woman.”
The papers claim that, as a “toxic” debate raged online over plans to allow people to “self-ID” as another gender, Mrs. Scottow tweeted “defamatory” messages about Miss Hayden.
She is also alleged to have used accounts in two names to “harass, defame, and publish derogatory and defamatory tweets” about Miss Hayden, including referring to her as male, stating she was “racist, xenophobic and a crook” and mocking her as a “fake lawyer.”
Mrs. Scottow denied harassing or defaming Miss Hayden and said she holds a “genuine and reasonable belief” that a human “cannot practically speaking change sex,” but Deputy Judge Jason Coppel QC issued an interim injunction that bans her from posting any personal information about Miss Hayden on social media, “referencing her as a man,” or linking her to her “former male identity.”
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you how absolutely outrageous and unthinkable this is. If this woman was harassing this gender-confused individual online, perhaps that is not the kindest way to behave.
But is it criminal?
Not in a society that professes to have any sense of free expression and speech.
What has become of the Western world when mothers are hauled off to jail and interrogated all for expressing beliefs that contradict the status quo? For being “toxic” to people?
This has always been the most dangerous aspect of gender theory to the whole of society. If an individual chooses to live their lives changing their appearance to imitate the opposite sex, that is one thing.
But when society demands that we all go along with their delusion and face criminal charges if we decline to do so?
Even Orwell couldn’t have imagined something this outrageous.
